SAYING 'NO' TO SPLOST IS AS EASY AS...
....AS...
ROLLING OVER IN YOUR SLEEP
Last eveningt I attended a propaganda session at the Douglass Theatre run by Sam Hart, chairman of the Bibb County Commission. Commissioner Joe Allen as well as Representative David Lucas, in his new role as NewTown Macon's hired gun, addressed sparse and underwhelming crowd.
The evening's event solidified my stand against voting for the Special Option Sales Tax as part of our civic duties come July 20th.
Why? Because these guys have the horse before the cart. It is clear that the Bibb County Commissioners did not think things through FROM THE BEGINNING and is engaging in a not so subtle charade of Cover Your Gluteus Maximus.
In an effort to sell the unsellable to the gullible, the board of commish has loaded the extra penny sales tax down with goodies designed to appeal to every man, woman, and child in the area. BUT....and this is a mighty big b u t, the tacking on of the candy is an afterthought to an ill-devised plan to shove through what will become an almost permanent extra tax burden. The centerpiece of this tax is of what some have termed the 'Taj Mahal' of county courtcouses, at a minimum expense of forty-three million bucks during a depressed economy.
Part of what Chairman Hart said sounds a little like the local version of the Obama stimulus plan: SPEND AND IT WILL GROW. I have heard figures tossed around about new jobs created from five to eight hundred. These, of ocurse, are temporary jobs, mostly in the buiolding trades. Besides who makes up these estimates in the first place? How valid are they?
In any event a Taj Mahal is the last thing we need right now. Certainly the sorely outdated waste water system, parks and green areas, juvenile justice facilities are far more important than any proposed gargantuan court house.
Here an article sent in recently by Frank Pinkston who is spear-heading the anti SPLOST movement via a newsletter called THE ANTI SPLOST NEWS. It came out after after the publication of an editorial by Charles Richardson and the senior staff at our local T'GRAPH. It makes sense to me.
TELEGRAPH EDITORIAL
THIS SPLOST IS FLAWED; SHOULD BE DEFEATED
The Editorial Board of the Macon Telegraph, on Sunday June 27, unanimously called for the defeat of this SPLOST, labeling it FLAWED. In a well written Editorial Opinion, the flaws of this SPLOST were exposed. The County’s failure to cooperate by rushing a vote in July is a significant factor in the Board’s recommendation to vote NO. Telegraph Editor Charles Richardson termed the “cultural facilities” part of the SPLOST a “cockamamie plan.”
Because the County forced this SPLOST, no project will be funded except for the Taj Mahal courthouse complex for years. This is a significant reason the Telegraph calls this SPLOST “flawed.” To quote the editorial “City and County residents would actually see their projects funded sooner if this SPLOST fails and another is approved at the first opportunity.” Please forward this newsletter and the Editorial Board’s recommended NO vote to all your friends and family.
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE
“City and County residents would actually see their projects funded sooner if this SPLOST fails and another is approved at the first opportunity.” The Editorial Board recommends we “Think Community and vote NO” on this flawed SPLOST.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
The Telegraph’s editorial has validated our reasons for opposing THIS FLAWED SPLOST. Our opponents have tens of thousands of dollars to mislead the public on the SPLOST. Let’s all work together to show that money cannot buy support of a FLAWED SPLOST.
Please forward this newsletter and the Editorial Board’s recommended NO vote to all your friends and family.
Let’s all vote NO on this SPLOST on July 20.
