Government School Teachers
’A SORRY LOT OF SAPS’
’A SORRY LOT OF SAPS’
Years ago, as a secondary school teacher (with some thirty-five years spent in private education) I used to make the following statement: “Ninety per cent of the public school teachers in Georgia are not worth the powder to blow them to hell.”
It offended teachers all over the state, and quite a few practicing Baptists as well, who felt that I had somehow disrespected hell.
Years later I would emend that sentence to something like this: “Ninety Per Cent Of This Nation’s Teachers Are Not Worth The Power To Blow Them To Hell”.
Of course, as a good atheist, I do not believe in hell. But then, I don’t believe in the course American education is taking. At all levels Education in the United States is largely a failure.
Most articles coming my way about the decline in American education focus, usually, on the mess being made by governments near and far. Here is a short piece that appeared in LEW ROCKWELL dot COM this morning which concentrates, rather, on the inadequacy of the teacher and teacher training. It is a quick read and should make you think, and maybe inroll your rugrats in a home school curriculum or a private school.
The column is called “Public School Educators: A Sorry Lot of Saps” and was written by a chap named Jeremiah Dyke. You can access it directly here: http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig10/dyke7.1.1.html
One of these days I will unload on you about what I really think ought to constitute a child’s education.
