MACON MUSIC AND HERITAGE FESTIVAL

It took a little teeth pulling and some detective work to get the schedule for this year's edition of THE MACON HERITAGE AND MUSIC FESTIVAL, but we found it. Schedule follows (below).

Called the Georgia Music Hall of Fame....they didn't know a thing, said the sweet voice on the other end of the phone, but had heard some rumors. A call to Lisa Love, head honcho, was not returned.

Got some info from the good folks at NEW TOWN MACON, but they were mostly in the dark. The Heritage Festival was, apparently, put together at the last minute and word had not gotten around to John Q. Public by the middle of this afternoon.

Finally reached another sweet voiced thing named Valerie who was able to set things straight. She even emailed me with the weekend festival's happenings. We appreciate her help. Our wish is that this event is not too late in coming together to leave its mark.

Anyway...our hats off to Valerie. Here is the schedule:

I almost keeled over when I read this email. In all the many times I have invited a university official to respond to a FIRE newsletter or a Professor Mike Adams attack, President Harker is the very first to have made an effort to respond. If you scroll down briefly you will find the original posts which condemned the University for what was termed a program of Marxist indoctrination of students who reside in resident halls.

The President's letter is reproduced here without any editing whatsoever.

President Harker is to be commended for his prompt reply. Please read his letter below and click on the links it contains.

Maybe we can begin to get some true exchange of opinion in our debating, which is better than either the Republicans or Democrats can do on Capitol Hill these days.

A missive arrived this morning from the JPFO. Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership.

I have included material from their newsletter frequently on this b’log. The organization provides a feisty counterpoint to the more staid NRA. Sometimes they go a little too far in their condemnations, but they are a passionate lot which believes wholeheartedly in the rightness of the cause and in importance of the Second Amendment. And more power to ‘the Liberty Crew’ (as they call themselves) and in their fine work at helping preserve not only our rights as gun owners, but at guarding other liberties guaranteed under the original Constitution and the subsequent Bill of Rights.

Here is trheir latest. It is simply a link to what JPFO calls dirty tricks on the part of the BATFE (The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives which, according to The Liberty Crew, is a swollen Federal Bureaucracy acting often well outside the laws of the land.

The Newsletter contains a link to a powerful indictment of the BATFE by an writer named Neil Smith who has penned a scathing piece about the methods used by the agency to entrap a young fellow named David Bacon who is now doing serious jail time. The piece describes methods and tactics that ought to be limited to America’s pursuit of the terrorists who would destroy us from within and without, rather than harassing law-abiding citizens.

REVISITED

President Harker must be made aware of the United States Supreme Court’s decision in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (1943). Writing for the Court, Justice Robert H. Jackson declared, “If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein.”

In this column, BRAVE NEWARK WORLD, Mike Adams, himself a university professor, goes over much the same ground that we saw yesterday in the FIRE article posted yesterday (below).

The nuts and bolts of the flap revolve around the University of Deleware’s attempts to indoctrinate, force feed, actually, students living in resident halls to accept a Marxist (and I do not shrink from using that term) world view complete with every element of modern campus political correctness one can imagine.

Professor Adams gives full credit to the FIRE newsletter we cited here yesterday, and adds some insight of his own. For he, a respected professor of criminology, is fighting his own battles against the indoctrination of our college young.

THE LITTLE CAMPUS OF HORRORS
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DELEWARE BIG BROTHER BOASTS A PHD
NEWS FROM F.I.R.E.

The university’s views are forced on students through a comprehensive manipulation of the residence hall environment, from mandatory training sessions to “sustainability” door decorations. Students living in the university’s eight housing complexes are required to attend training sessions, floor meetings, and one-on-one meetings with their Resident Assistants (RAs). The RAs who facilitate these meetings have received their own intensive training from the university, including a “diversity facilitation training” session at which RAs were taught, among other things, that “[a] racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States, regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality.”

And so it goes at the UNIVERSITY OF DELEWARE where students in residence halls are required to undergo a kind of ‘retraining’ or, better, perhaps. ‘brainwashing’ designed to bring thought and action into line with what their university deems ‘acceptable’.

American POW’s at the Hanoi Hilton were forced to endure a not entirely dissimilar process known as ‘re-education’. So were the Cambodian city-dwellers driven into the countryside where the were ‘re-educated’ and slaughtered by the million. Red China still ‘re-educates’ its dissidents, although their process often ends with a bullet in the brain inside a sports arena. A kid coming into the university system is ‘shown’ that much of what he learned over eighteen years living under a parental roof was misguided racism because he had been indoctrinated with the notion of ‘white supremacy’ from birth. Ours is a racist society, so goes the theory, and we owe it all to those evil white guys who have guided our nation since the pioneers were exploiting indigenous Americans.

If my son or daughter were subjected to that kind of coordinated propaganda I would come looking for the administrator responsible with blood in my eye.

Fortunately we have the cooler head of Greg Lukianoff and his FIRE organization which has now taken up the cause of the UDel students trapped inside their dormitories.

On October 29 FIRE sent a letter to University of Delaware President Patrick Harker detailing that organization’s position in this matter. FIRE has been very effective in countering the epidemic of political correctness currently sweeping our college campi. That link will take you to the letter, a damn good read all by itself.

As always, when I put a link to a FIRE communication on my b’log, I give the folks involved a chance to read and respond. They rarely do. Something about the craven nature of the modern university administrator who won’t stick his head outside his ivory tower unless dragged into court.

FRACTURING THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT

Is the Religious Right losing it’s clout?

Many think so. The knee-jerk reaction on behalf of single issues like school prayer, abortion, and spoiling the child seems to be fast fading among the conservatively religious crowd. There is more of a spirit of rendering unto Caesar and keeping moral issues out of the hands of politicians.

No wonder. Consider the clowns we elect and keep on electing. Do you really you trust that crowd to be the guardians of your cherished personal beliefs?

Texan Bill Murchison, is a conservative whose work sometimes appears in TOWN HALL as it did today. In FALL OF THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT he explores the tenuous relationship between the conservative wing of the GOP and religious righteous. It should surprise not a few who read it.

THE FIRST THREE STEPS

Strokes kill. It is imperative to get the vivtim to a hospital immediately. How does the layman recognize a stroke when it happens? Read on and spread the word. You will be saving lives:

STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Steps

A friend sent this to me and encouraged me to spread the word. I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, In grid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00pm , Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this...


A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.


RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S*Ask the individual to SMILE .
T *Ask the person to TALK . to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE
(Coherently) (i.e. . . It is sunny out today)
R*Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS .

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue! ... if the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke - Also give the individual 2 Aspirins as they will help to thin out there blood...

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

FEMA HOLDS A
NEWS CONFERENCE

”FEMA's little charade was no different than what occurs every single day when members of the old media show up to cover the world's important stories. The only difference is where the "reporter's" paycheck is drawn.

How is this different than what you see on any given day in the old media?
"Are you happy with FEMA's response so far?" one staffer asked.
"I'm very happy with FEMA's response so far," Johnson replied.
And so it went for more than 10 minutes, without any journalists.
Oh, the horror. Just like virtually every press conference one can witness in the modern era appears to be void of any journalists, so was this fake version of a press conference. Of course, at the same time that ABC news is reporting on FEMA's fake press conference, they run a puff-piece on Chertoff, now in charge of FEMA as the head of Homeland Security. Trust them, the government learned its lesson after Katrina and is working hard to give us all confidence that FEMA can properly do its job.”


By this time everybody with a nose for the news has heard about the ‘faked’ news conference held by FEMA in the wake of the devastating Southern California fires. The questions fielded during that conference were not from ‘reporters’, legitimate members of our increasingly politicized and over-rated Fourth Estate, but FEMA employees themselves.

Dirty Pool!! Maybe. But how does this cluster love-in differ from some of the more ‘normal’ news conferences held daily in D.C., the home of more dirt-bag politicians, bureaucrats, and lobbyists than was ever collected in a single space since the dawn of civilization?

Enter Rick Fisk and his piece: How Is This Different? (Kill Your TV) found in today’s LEW ROCKWELL newsletter and you may be in for a surprise.

Fisk is a fellow who has himself done without TV for ten years and preaches abstinence from the boob tube. For me it has only been a TV-less month. I pulled my cable with the idea of going satellite. So far every promise to connect has resulted in failure on my part. Virtually no TV except one local channel. Guess what? I am reading more, getting more writing done, and enjoying life a heck of a lot more than when I measured so much of my day by The Weather Channel, Cavuto, Gibson and others of the commentator/pundit ilk. This might become a habit.

Read the column. Please do. It is written with insight and strong belief. I like passion in a writer no matter what his leaning or persuasion. And don’t forget, the entire piece is about news conferences and why the press ought not be too critical of a tally lighted, staged event.

MIKE ADAMS ON
ATHEISM

I have seen people who began tithing to the church and loving their enemies upon converting to Christianity. But that is not how it always ends for the converted Christian. Like me, many other Christians have resolved the tension by, at least temporarily, deciding to abandon the Way. Sometimes it is simply easier to say “I am not a Christian.”

Mike Adams, criminology professor, pens here a column in which he discusses his journey from Christianity, to agnosticism, to atheism, and back to the fold. Coincidentally I am currently reading C.S. Lewis’ SURPRISED BY JOY in which the youngster of thirteen becomes an atheist and by nineteen had rediscovered a more puissant version of the faith.

This is an interesting subject for me because I was a candidate for the Episcopal ministry at eighteen and an atheist at nineteen where I have remained there ever since. But, rest assured, yours truly is not one of those ‘militant’ non-believers who wants to take your Christmas crèche and your Baby Jesus away from the steps of city hall. I am of the opinion that you believe as you wish, I shall do likewise, and we will both be happy in our respective faiths. Don’t try to cram Christianity (or Islam etc.) down my throat, and I won’t endeavor return the favor.

ACCORDING TO HILLARY CLINTON
OK...MAYBE NOT BRAVE SO MUCH AS PLAIN OLD 'NEW'

”That highly Democratic Congress and President Hillary would likely combine to enact legislation so far reaching and ideologically polarizing as to be a rare turning point in American history. One has to think of Woodrow Wilson's first two years, FDR's first term, Lyndon Johnson's first two years as president and, on the right, Reagan's revolution to find anything comparable in scope and extent.
It's a frightening thought.


Dick Morris is just now getting warmed up for the 2008 Presidential campaign.

As much as he likes William Clinton, he cannot abide the ex-POTUS’s ersatz mate (‘connubial’, not ‘running’). We are fortunate to have this quondam Clintonista in the media mix. He knows Hillary better than anybody and is more than willing to stake his stalking horse reputation on bringing us all the dirt deep inside her methods and the machinations of her mind.

Here is a classic column. He takes a close look at what Her Nibs is likely to do during her first minutes….hours in office. His advice to us all, “HOLD ON TO YOUR WALLETS.”

LATIN TRANSLATION

This is only for those of you who knew me in another life when I was a (more or less) respected teacher of the Latin Language and of all things Classical.

AT a party not long ago, some of the guests somewhat tipsily tried to get me to 'translate' modern expressions into the mother tongue. The pixilated party goers thought it would be great fun to trip me up.

One inebriate said, "Don Betcha can't translate 'DON'T TASE ME, BRO!!'"

I replied, an evil grin on my ugly, bearbed puss: NOLI ME TASERE, FRAT!!!

HATE CRIME(?)
on
BOULEVARD

First thing this morning one of our Neighborhood Watch leaders asked me whether I had heard about the ‘latest’ incident on our fair street.

I hadn’t. Dinner company last night and after cleaning up the mess I zoned out until the cats’ wake up call.

Turns out that somebody spray painted white cars parked along the street with black paint.

Only white cars, only black paint.

Now despite ‘shots fired’ two weeks ago and lots of speeders along this stretch, things have been pretty quiet of late. Our own kids are under control and there hasn’t been much sign of outlanders raiding our livestock and poisoning our wells.

Now this. The police were called and did one of their pro forma investigations. They have to be cursory, you see, for there more serious crimes a-plenty in this precinct . It takes all the skill in public relations an officer can muster to make that all-important, slit second decision about which incidents get reported and which get consigned to comforting oblivion. Don’t want frighten the population with the real crime statistics. Might get the wrong idea.

If ever we get to the bottom of this incident and it turns out that the perps are Black, will it be treated as a ‘hate crime’? Was the black on white color scheme an intentional hint to the white resident that he had better watch his pale ass ‘cuz we’re comin’ to get ya’. It is our fervent hope that the coloration was unintentional and the vehicles randomly selected by young people simply out for a good time. Maybe a little drunk. Stoned, perhaps. High. Shit-faced just possibly. Harmless stuff, good fun, just ‘kids’ letting off some steam after a hard week poring over books at school.

Or maybe it is something more sinister. If it so be, then we have a hate crime on our hands and I trust Macon-Bibb County officialdom will treat it as such. Crime is crime, hate crime gets more time. Or something.

Personally I think the notion of ‘hate crime legislation’ is one of the stupidest things politicians have come up with in recent decades. And you have to admit that the number and frequency of idiotic laws on the national, state, and local levels is alarming. ‘First do no harm’ has become ‘let’s see whom we can screw over.’ All power to the incumbent!!!

But since we have such legislation on the books, let’s see if we can use it with equanimity, remembering that one man’s noose is another’s symbol of Halloween.

Let the chips fall where they may.

DICK MORRIS SUGGESTS:
PRESIDENT BUSH CAN UNDERCUT HILLARY'S RUSH TO SOCIALIZED MEDICINE

The old bill allowed children living in families making up to four times the poverty level — about $80,000 to be covered. The new legislation drops the cap to three times the poverty level — about $60,000. The old measure included illegal immigrants. The new one doesn’t. The bill formerly covered childless adults. The new one excludes them. The new bill isn’t perfect. It should be more narrowly targeted and should exclude adults and focus only on children. But it’s pretty good.

Dick Morris has what seems to be a pretty good plan to cut the feet out from under what a President Clinton, II will do during the first weeks of her reign in the area of health care. He argues that by depriving Her Nibs of the ‘for the children’ element, President Bush can stall this nation’s rush to pure socialized medicine.

HOROWITZ SHOUTED DOWN AT EMORY

On Wednesday evening, the Emory University Chapter of the College Republicans hosted acclaimed author and activist David Horowitz for a lecture on radical Islam as part of Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week. From the beginning of Horowitz’s speech, rowdy protesters continually interrupted him and less than half an hour into the event, the crowd became so disruptive that police were called in and Horowitz had to be escorted off stage.

Another Georgia Campus heard from. This time not a state school, but the vaunted, internationally acclaimed Emory, considered one of the finest universities in the nation.

And free speech inched along a little closer to its demise in a totalitarian society that elements on the far left (and the far right) will go to any length to achieve.

This article appeared in today’s FRONT PAGE a conservative online publication which I sometimes read, although it isn’t always to my tastes or liking.

It is a sad day when a speaker of any stripe is shouted down on a college campus where a free and open exchange of ideas used to be the norm. That sad day arrived in Atlanta Wednesday night, two days ago. You can read the whole story here: Leftist Brown Shirts Shut Down Horowitz Speech at Emory

It may have started by a call-in to 940 AM, the morning show hosted by Shane McBryde and Ron Frazier. The caller was Councilwoman Elaine Lucas.

Elaine was uh, er, 'um 'pissed off' that there are still those on the council who are trying to derail the Downtown Hotel soon to be built in the Centreplex parking lot. Elaine was unkind to certain un-named souls whom she called, collectively, 'idiots' I do not wish to be judgmental here, folks, but I, too, have referred to some of these (presumably) same individuals as ‘idiots’ and quite a few others in my sixty-nine years.

Elaine’s speech raised some eyebrows and not a little dander in the community. But, not to be outdone, in this morning’s TELEGRAPH, that paper of record for our little community, none other than Phil Dodson wrote a column which now has a fair segment of the community up in arms.

Jami Gaudet and Kenny Bergamy, 940's former co-hosts provided us with a truly excellent radio feast, fair and balanced, and a credit to this community. Their replacements, McBryde and Frasier are no more than outsiders (horrors) who offer a lop-sided (read ‘conservative’) shtick and do not understand the community.

These comments got into McBryde’s craw this morning and he seemed to declare war not only on Dodson and THE TELEGRAPH, but on all manner of (un-named) obfuscating elements within the community who would keep us divided, disjointed, and at each others’ throats. It was quite a speech….full of passion, sound, and fury.

But signifying what? Dodson’s column and the dynamic duo’s reaction coming so soon after almost seemed as if things had been cooked up cozily in the back room of a Cherry Street bar to sell a few newspapers and maybe a little air time. Maybe stir the pot a little in the downtime of a local news cycle where the major questions seem to be (1) Can David Corr’s write-in campaign topple Councilman Timley and (2) How many thousand votes will Democrat Reichert stomp Republican Cousino by in their drive to the Corner Office, and (3) How the hell are we going to transport water to the Atlanta airport?

The timing of this flaplet seems just a little too perfect from where I sit. Maybe not, of course, I do not have ingress to THE TELEGRAPH, nor to 940 AM, nor to Cherry Street back bar rooms. Maybe a genuine, substantial, kick-‘em-in-the-groin donnybrook will now erupt in the media which might even be good for Macon if some of the underlying (read ‘race’) elements of our hidebound culture can truly be brought into real focus.

Time will or won’t tell. But I suspect that the controversy will be a gentlemanly, limp-wristed affair. We are all Southerners, after all, and our culture demands a measure of elegance and refinement, even when we are slicing our opponent's manhood off at the root.

first met Mike when I became his consultant in his race for lieutenant governor of Arkansas. He was a refreshing change from my previous Arkansas client, but you probably know that story. I was impressed when I first asked Mike about his views on parole for violent felons. I anticipated a standard right-wing response. Instead, he said, “Oh, no, the Christian concept of forgiveness requires that we allow parole. We just have to use it wisely.” I was amazed . . . and sold.

This article might have been better titled CONSERVATIVE’S SPOTLIGHT FALLS…… Dick Morris traces the GOP’s Diogenean search for a standard bearer who would uphold conservative causes. Mitt Romney is too Mormon, Fred Thompson too uninspiring, and Newt Gingrich too unavailable. That leaves Mike Huckabee and it might not be a bad choice at all.

So explains our favorite insider pundit who gives us some excellent reasons to give Governor Huckabee a second and third careful look.

OFFICIALDOM'S WAR WITH FREE SPEECH ON A GEORGIA UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

“A kind of madness seems to be gripping our colleges, one in which merely claiming a student poses a ‘threat’—no matter how absurd or attenuated the allegation may be—is enough to punish even the most clearly protected speech,” FIRE President Greg Lukianoff said. “This case represents the extreme of this troubling trend. Hayden Barnes did nothing wrong; the claim that his speech was threatening is specious, and the university’s decision to expel him is truly chilling.”

This one hits close to home, right here in the Peach State. Anti-rfee speech and campus crapola have found their way to our own South Georgia

In a nutshell, a student at Valdosta State University, a kid named Hayden Barnes, was expelled for protesting quite effectively the university’s decision to build two parking garages without, apparently, taking environmental needs into consideration. Hayden, something of a campus brat, even went after VSU President Ronald M. Zaccari who called him ‘a clear and present danger’.

Nonsense. Not if the facts of the case as stated on the FIRE website are accurate. The boy may be obnoxious, a royal pain in the gluteus maximus of the college administration, a later-day Socratean gadfly’, if you will, but there seems to be nothing in his speech or actions that warrants expulsion. What seems more likely, from the article snyway, is that VSU President Zaccari made the confrontation personal and decided to take his ball home thus ending the game.

Come on, Zacc!! We expect kids to be kids, and don’t give me the idiotic notion that college students are ‘adults’, young adults’, even. There is nothing much that is adult about eighteen and nineteen-year-old undergraduates. You know that. Let these children be children, whilst we must be the adults who guide them.

So FIRE is off and running on a free speech issue on a college campus right here in Georgia. The article calls such heavy handed tactics by college administrators ‘chilling’. It is actually more than that , much more. If this is where our nation is heading, then people like Hayden Barnes will be doomed to spend serious time in some American gulag, along with those of us who take our first amendment rights more seriously than some college presidents seem to.

THE TEACHER'S JOB

This won't mean much to you teachers who are embroiled in troubled classrooms where the kiddies do pretty much as they want, your life is in constant danger, and the faculty has no support from parents, administration, or the community in general. Your primary problem is one of survival. And good luck.

But there are many teachers on all levels who have an inflated opinion of their own importance and academic cojones.

Schools, colleges in particular, are fighting hard to expand. Here in Georgia an extra houndred thousand kiddies are expected to enter the University System in a very few years. The truth is that 'expansion' usually means a lowering of 'academic standards', at least temporarily. A college doesn't survive for long if it cannot fill its residence halls. That is income part of which is used to pay teachers.

Last night came a phone call from a level headed former student of mine now teaching in a Georgia college. He was fresh from a faculty meeting during which some of the older faculty members were complaining bitterly that too many of the new crop of kid could not 'meet my standards'.

This took me back many years where were heard not infrequently similar complaints, make that 'bitching'

"My class", "my standards," "this is how I grade", "can't do my work," "I have academic balls, er, credentials".

Sickening. Schools do not exist to serve the teacher; the teacher exists to serve the student.

To the best of his ability.

I laughed with my young friend and told him that a teacher's only job is to do his level best with the young people entrusted to his ministration. A teacher, ideally, will take a youngster at whatever level he walks into that classroom and move him as far as he can in the course of a school year. If that means 'adjusting standards' or 'gading on improvement', so be it.

Academic standards? Hell, even the average MA or PhD even is a hell of a lot easier to get than it was a couple of decades back.

Teacher, instruct thyself.

"A similar silence greeted the cancellation of a speech by Minuteman leader Jim Gilchrist at Columbia University. Gilchrist and a colleague were driven off the stage at Columbia last year by angry radicals. Gilchrist was reinvited a month ago, but when the speech was announced, campus Hispanics, who consider him racist for opposing the flood of illegals into the country, pressured the relevant student authorities to ban him. The campus chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union thought about protesting but decided not to. Again, I was able to find only one professor willing to say that silencing Gilchrist was a bad idea. I asked Gilchrist if there were more. He said he knows of no other instructor who spoke out. The campus joke is that Gilchrist should have come out in favor killing gays and nuking Israel. Then he would have been as welcome as Mahoud Amadinejad."

Ran into some of this last night in a phone call, but that's for another time. The sad truth is that 'frredom of speech' simply does not exist in many colleges and universities here in the twenty-first century.

As much as I admire Mike Adams for the professionalism of his columns, those particularly dealing with the sad state of higher education in these fifty states, I don’t always go along with what he says.

Every so often he comes out with a wholesome piece, so pro-christian that it forces me into my wold childhood pastime of chewing my nails to the quick.

Such is this…I am happy for the young man who is the center of the tale and happy as well for Professor Adams who exhibits great glee that another prodigal has been rescued from the clutches of Old Scratch, but it is not my thing, not from my point of view although I do respect that point of view.

”’Running a presidential campaign is good for business.’

Mark Penn, Hillary Clinton’s chief strategist and the Worldwide CEO of international public relations/ lobbying firm Burson-Marsteller, wrote those telling words in his confidential internal corporate blog. Given the breadth of his company’s representation of special interests, Penn’s assertion may be the understatement of the year. The number of Burson-Marsteller clients — both corporations and foreign governments — that will likely try to influence the next administration is staggering.


Observers of the Clintons have long said that the pair is especially attracted to money….dough….currency. Hillary more than bill, the source doesn’t matter just as long as it gets into her campaign war chest. She never met a hundred dollar bill she didn’t fall in love with.

Also not mattering to the good lady is the ‘ethics’ of raising money. There is a growing suspicion that a significant portion of her funding comes from Red Chinese sources.

The problem with large campaign contributions is that once you accept them, you are owned lock, stock, and barrel till your dying day, or end of your term whichever comes first.

Lots and lots of people all over the world now own a piece of Hillary Clinton.

IS THERE A POLICE AND NEWS BLACKOUT GOING ON
In Our Little Corner Of Maconga?

The ‘SHOTS FIRED” piece I did yesterday got me thinking, probably more than is good for an old bird.

Was what happened Friday night on Boulevard here deep into East Macon covered up by the cops? By the media? How about the nude body of a man alleged to have been a local TV news reporter discovered last Wednesday evening on Nottingham? Haven’t seen anything about that one either….not even an obituary, or so I am told. For I didn’t know the chap or what media outlet he worked for, and am relying entirely on the testimony of neighbors and eye witnesses.

According to residents who also heard the Friday Night barrage, police and an ambulance pulled up in front of one single family dwelling. The officers were acting ‘casually’, i.e. as if there were little amiss. One of them told the inquisitor that it was ‘only a domestic problem’ and that we were all perfectly safe.

Let’s see….eight shots…ambulance….lots of cops….nothing in the newspaper or other media. But we’re safe. ‘Don’t worry, be happy’. Ignorance is bliss.

Locals have a right…no, dammit, a duty to know what’s going on in their midst. Why the silence?

The most interesting factoid gleaned from today's early morning news is that some genius somewhere has declared the next seven days as (drum roll, please) NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK.

To celebrate this auspicious point in our history drug entrepreneurs everywhere plan to double up on the number of new meth labs opening across these, our fruited plains.

They have adopted the motto, "Better living through chemistry."

”SHOTS FIRED”

A shot rang out splitting the cool night air.

Eight shots, actually, 9mm. Or thereabouts, around the corner from our house, coming in rapid succession, a burst of six followed by two more deliberate. Two hundred yards away at the most, but out of sight.

9:30 last night. Quick call to 911 and cops blanketed the neighborhood within fifteen minutes. Apparently didn’t find anything.

Has to be outsiders. Nobody within two hundred yards of here would do that unless attacked. Besides everyone from around there attends our Neighborhood watch meetings and contributes.

We’re pretty well armed here in this buffer between civilization and ghetto chaos. Have to be. One by one our women are applying for carry permits allowing them to tote their dainty .38’s in a purse or a derringer in the cleavage. Both work fine. Woman raped about a quarter mile away, in her own home. Caught the bastard within two hours. Nobody opening the door to strangers right now. More women armed.

With all the trouble, the obscenity of black on black murder has not hit this district, not yet anyway. Too many kids dying horrible, needless deaths all over money, dope, women, respect, sneakers, too, I guess. Just not dying around here on the East side of the Old Muddy.

Some call ours a ‘siege mentality’. I prefer to think of little enclaves like this as outposts of culture and a more refined way of life. No sense in letting the barbarians have it all. Hell, no sense in letting the barbarians have any of it.

More and more people will have to get used to it. “Protect and serve” needs to be ratcheted back a bit….maybe just ‘serve’. I will endeavor to ‘protect’ myself and those I love and trust and live near. The Romans kept some semblance of their civilization going for more than a millennium. We should be able to eke out a few more decades, or years. Something.

If you find yourself in the middle of a home invasion, who ya gonna call…911 or Smith and Wesson?

Going out to find shell casings from last night. Who knows what goodies lurk in the trees and the brush but two hundred yards away. Two hundred yards to chaos. Two hundred yards to the beginning of time. Two hundred yards to a world more fraught with danger than most foreign countries, even California and Massachusetts.

UPDATE....just received the following email from a neighbor....it went to the Neighborhood Watch folks:

Does anyone know anything about the shooting last night on Boulevard?

Several of us on Laurel & Curry heard about 5-8 gun shots around 9:30 or 10 pm. After seeing the police out & about, searching on Laurel & zooming thru the alley, I left to go to Kroger (about 11 pm). I saw an ambulance in front of the big house on Blvd that's for sale/rent with the beautiful lead glass front door. I asked the cop if they were there in relation to the shooting. He said yes but that we were not in danger so I went on my way. There were about 4-6 police officers chatting and hanging around the ambulance. They didn't seem to be to concerned about anything and all seemed very relaxed. My guess is that the incident was something domestic....but it sure was scary!!!

WHO NEEDS THEM?
THE BIBB COUNTY-NIXON WHITEHOUSE PART TWO

This, of course, from Vic Jones, who, in his eternal quest for records of Bibb County Commish meetings is running into a brick wall.

Is this a deliberate ploy on the part of the County COmmission to keep the Forest Hill folks from knowing what is really going on behind the scenes? Or is it simply sheer careless undersight (read 'stupidity').

This mess is bringing out the hidden conspiracy theorist in me. Haven't felt this way since the Grassy Knoll, or, dare we say, the Nixon WhiteHouse in the good old hunker down in the bunker days.

F.I.R.E. ANNOUNCES
VICTORY AND VINDICATION IN THE OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE LAW SUIT
LONG LIVE FREE SPEECH!!!

The complaint explained that Occidental officials “blatantly misrepresented the facts of Plaintiff’s situation, in a knowing and malicious attempt to prevent civil liberties groups and other potential supporters from coming to his defense. The College’s Dean of Students, General Counsel and other university officials painted Plaintiff as a racist, criminal, drug pusher, advocate of violence, unethical student representative, and as a person responsible for an atmosphere of terror on campus in which women were ‘unable to concentrate, sleep, or even walk across campus without fear.’”

You may or may not be familiar with a group called FIRE or THE FOUNDATION FOR INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS IN EDUCATION.

It is an organization that often gets involved with such things as ‘free speech’ causes on liberal college campi which have wronged students and/or teachers for expressing views that clash with the Marxist, leftist, anti United States, anti-individual, ‘politically correct’, deterministic and dialectic views of so many of today’s college teachers at schools where slavish adherence to ‘speech codes’ destroys the very foundations of what we once knew as ‘Liberal Education’.

What we have here is a FIRE newsletter subtitled “Victory at Long Last: Occidental College Settles Free Speech Lawsuit with Wronged Student.”

It details a three year lawsuit with the Occidental by a kid named Jason Antebi, a DJ/commentator on the campus radio station. He was a very sarcastic burr under the saddle of the school’s administration which tried to harass, intimidate, silence, and punish him for exercising his right of free speech albeit in a most politically correct, straight jacketed atmosphere. He sued. Even the ACLU got involved ON THE KID’S SIDE.

My guess this young man was probably a pretty obnoxious brat, going out of his way to anger the school’s administration.

Tell you a secret. I can identify with that for during my undergraduate years I was also a pain in the tush to the good folks who ran Hobart College in Upstate New York from 1957 to 1961. We all survived without lawsuit or even bitter rancor. Civilization has declined more than a little in forty-six years.

But here be the text of part of a speech delivered by Pete Stark (D-CA) after the House failed to over ride the President's recent veto of expanded child health coverage:

"You don't have money to fund the war or children. But you're going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president's amusement."

MORE SUGGESTIONS FOR CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGE

”The federal Constitution has been preeminent over the state constitutions since the days of Chief Justice John Marshall, but not so among the political parties, which live in a no-man's-land--a Wild, Wild West--in law and practice: nationally organized but state-based, fundamentally private associations of like-minded people yet groups with vital public functions (such as the nomination of our highest elected officials). Darwinian evolution is fine for the origin of species, but it is past time for the necessary political institutions called parties to be governed by some sort of federal intelligent design. Only the Constitution can achieve this aim. If any ongoing disaster can prove the point, surely it is the quadrennial orgy of the presidential primary process.”

This article continues the series Mr. Sabato started a few weeks back suggesting some significant changes in the U.S. constitution to bring it more in line with the reality of life in the twenty-first century.

From the founding of the Republic right up to the present time changes in the fundamental document which governs (more or less) us have come piecemeal, amendment by amendment as dictated by specific needs and perceptions. Sabato proposes some sweeping changes to address the fact that parts of the original document are completely out of date.

He addresses several key areas in today’s analysis….specifically the role of modern political parties, never mentioned in the original constitution, by the way, including the obscenity of modern candidate financing. He also discusses primaries and caucuses, and the rush ‘to be the first’, not unlike a room full of second graders and the electoral college which, despite it’s widely-perceived anachronism status, does still have some value.

It is a most excellent piece, probably the best thing I have read in some time. It takes a little time to get through….took the entire time needed to sip my way through the morning’s first cup of joe. Well worth your time, this.

MAYOR ELLIS HEADING TO BERMUDA?
SURPRISE, JACk!!!

Friends of ours are heading to Bermuda early tomorrow for a long weekend of food, drink, and snorkeling.

Spoke to them a few minutes ago and was told that Mayor Ellis is heading in the same direction now that the City Council rolled over and restored the credit card expense account it took away from Hizzoner but two weeks ago.

So it was time for some quick wardrobe planning….what to drape the body with when arriving at air port customs on the island nation.

So simple….one will sport a barely used HIT THE ROAD, JACK T-shirt while the other will display something similar, a newly de-mothballed RECALL ELLIS DOT COM. Gotta love imagination.

You can’t escape, Jack.

LISTEN TO THE OLD FARTS

Young Black men, mostly, seem to be doing everything they can to place themselves in a dead-end track in the evolutionary record.

We no longer live in a society where eagle-eyed grandmothers would regularly take a switch to anybody’s child observed or even suspected of less than desirable behavior. Those kids grew up pretty darn well. But today the grandmothers are in fear for their own lives, barricaded behind burglar bars in neighborhoods overrun by drug dealers, gangstas and thugs. Too many Black kids are growing up to face a bleak future that is likely to include long prison sentences and violent death.

Enter Bill Cosby and Alvin Poussaint, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Med, a brilliant duo who have teamed up to write a new book: "Come On People: On the Path from Victims to Victors."

Suzanne Fields, Columnist for the Washington Times, brings this volume into sharp focus in a recent column called LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE OLD FOGIES

Nut be careful. Governor Huckabee might be the campaign’s ‘nice guy in resident’, and many of us would like to see his poll numbers higher. He is a diligent plugger, intelligent, honest, who had a remarkable track record as Arkansas Governor. He has not yet clicked with probable voters to any great degree and it is getting late in the game as we near primary season.

The Morris piece is a good little article. Makes me hope Huckabee has a chance….and he might just be the Conservatives’ last chance.

FREE SPEECH TAKES ONE IN THE GUT AT HAMLINE UNIVERSITY

The following communication came in today from ‘The Liberty Crew’ over at JPFO…JEWS FOR THE PRESERVATION OF FIREARM OWNDESHIP. It is both timely and important.

Of particular importance are the two links contained in the alert. The first details the tribulation of a student at Hamline University who made the suggestion that individuals ought to be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus as a buffer against violence. This was the exercise of his free speech rights. The University suspended him and he cannot return to class until he has undergone a psychiatric evaluation. Free speech once again tastes the muck

The second link is takes the reader to an article entitled "Raging Against Self Defense: A Psychiatrist Examines The Anti-Gun Mentality" by Dr. Sarah Thompson. I don’t know if Sara carries a piece in her purse but her article is excellent.

DICK MORRIS THINKS
ALGORE CAN BEAT HILLARY???

”If the bumper sticker of ’92 and ’96 (Clinton-Gore) divides, and we find Gore running against Hillary Clinton, Al Gore could not only beat the former First Lady for the Democratic nomination, he could win the presidency. Gore can seize this opportunity as the campaigns of Obama and Edwards are fading, out-fundraised, out-managed and outmaneuvered by Hillary’s campaign machine. Al Gore – the newly minted Nobel laureate – could steal the nomination from Hillary’s well-oiled machine.

Personally I don’t buy it; I do not think that Algore can win the Democratic nomination in light of the vast popular surge Her Nibs is currently experiencing.

But Dick Morris does and thinks, in light of the ex VEEP’s new-found rock star status as a Nobel Prize winner added to the fact that he was an important and very involved element within the Clinton The First’s administration, that Alsie can win the total Taco in November, 2008.

His arguments are excellent, but he doesn’t take into consideration the momentum the She Clinton’s campaign is enjoying.

There is an element within the Party of the Mythic Jackass that sees Hillary a big winner during the run-up, but a loser in November. She is, they reason, too polarizing….simply put. Too many folks simply do not trust her.

HOW THE NAACP IS HELPING RAISE THE ECONOMIC STANDARDS OF
HISPANICS

As it is in Macon, the NAACP of North Carolina is about as useful to the Black population it alleges to serve as teats (“tits”) on a bull.

This one-trick pony, once a vibrant and important organization for political and social change in America, has reduced it self to near irrelevancy by dwelling on the past, rather than the future of the Black experience.

Professor Mike Adams writes one of his very best recent columns focusing on the NAACP’s attempt to extort monies and or extra privileges from the state of North Carolina for a race riot that took place in 1898.

Harumph!!! That’s 1898 way back in the bad old days.

HIZZONER MAKES A BUSINESS DECISION

The mayor gave a news conference in city hall today.

I wasn’t invited. But that’s old news. Hizzoner told Ron Wildman not to invite me after a conference more than two years ago when yours truly pounced with all four feet …on his moronic statement that Macon has no gangs, just wannabes. You know, like the gangsta wannabes who are killing off young black men at an ever-accelerating rate. Yeah, those wannabes. Armed with more ordnance than brains. Kids killing kids. “That muthah dissed me, bro!!” Good enough reason to kill somebody, I guess. “Bastad took my bitch.” And so it goes.

But today in explaining why he would not sign off on the bonds to fund the bonds needed to float the downtown hotel, C. Jack told us hiss not ‘a political decision but a business decision’.

Good. Good enough. Business decision.

Don’t you wish he was making business decisions eight years ago when he started?

Business decision. Right!!!

A LITTLE HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON JOE LIEBERMAN

”It is unwise, while seeking ascendancy in your party, to berate senior figures in the same party, which is what Joe Lieberman was until the avant-gardists in Greenwich decided to oust him. Just possibly, Christopher Dodd will find himself rejected for president, and rejected two years later for yet another term in the Senate. Maybe the Democrats in Greenwich will attempt to draft James Buckley*, restoring a sense of historical order”

A major problem of congressional Democrats is what to do with Joe Lieberman after kicking him in the teeth in the 2006 primaries. Poor joe went from Party V.P. candidate to pariah in a nanosecond because of his fairly aggressive stance on the Iraq War. Harry Reid and friends need him more than ever in a Senate composed of 48 Dems, 48 Republicans, one Socialist, and good old Independent Joe. It is just one more embarrassment to a party that promised to hang the moon when it swept into narrow ‘victory’, but has managed to deliver next to nothing. Rumor has it that Mr. Lieberman is the number one gossip topic at DC cocktail parties this season.

This is a great little column by William Buckley….read it for the enjoyment as much or more than for the political wisdom it contains, wisdom planted firmly in the pundit’s cheek.

”She has specifically refused to rule out a big increase in Social Security (FICA) taxes. This levy is currently enforced on the first $97,000 of income. Hillary would probably follow the lead of Democratic liberals and either raise the limit — at least doubling it — or eliminating it altogether. A self-employed American making $250,000 a year currently pays $12,125 in FICA taxes (12.5 percent x $97,000). If the threshold were eliminated, his FICA tax would jump to $31,250!”

SORDID TALE OF THE MISSING TAPE

DOES THE BIBB COUNTY COMMISSION SOUND MORE AND MORE LIKE THE NIXON WHITE HOUSE?

The devil may be making me do it, but here is an entire, unedited series of emails about a missing transcription tape from an important, Bibb County meeting back in December of last year.

It was a critical meeting, apparently, and the official (written) records are in much dispute. A tape was made but nobody can find it now.

”The political weapon of choice for the GOP is a plan that would distribute electoral votes to congressional district winners (one per district, plus two to the statewide winner of the popular vote) instead of the winner-take-all format that nearly every state currently favors. Gazing into Larry Sabato’s CRYSTAL BALL this morning I found a fascinating article called THE LATEST CALIFORNIA TREND. Click on that link from the article and you will discover what may be the trend of future presidential elections if California Republicans have their way.

It is a simple idea, and a fair one, this so called ‘District Plan’. What it would do is to allot a state’s electoral votes among its congressional districts so that each (sc major) candidate would get a share of the total electoral votes. The current system gives the entire bloc of any state’s votes to the candidate with the most votes…even if that be a single one. The ‘District Plan’ will be on an upcoming ballot in California.

Professor Sabato, never one to rest on simple reporting, analyzes several recent presidential elections as to what would have happened in key states under the District Plan.

WHITHER THE
MACON MUSIC AND HERITAGE FESTIVAL?

For several years now we have been reporting on the declining condition of the MACON MUSIC AND HERITAGE FESTIVAL, a celebration of the musical soul of Macon usually held in September.

In early fall banners appeared up and down the streets of the old inner city proclaiming loudly the advent of that year's event(s). The actuality rarely lived up to the hupe. But this is Macon.

And the MM&HF was the brainchild of C. Jack Ellis when he was but a freshman mayor, seven years ago now.

I called a source a few moments ago, a deep throated source well inside the contemporary Macon music scene. "Amazing you should ask that question, Don," source said, "They are having money problems."

Money problems...why just seven years ago we sent the festival's first corordinator, Karen Spellman, back to D.C. with 120 thousand of our taxpayer dollars. Mostly for doing diddley and squat.

About three years ago Hizzoner chewed me out in public on the steps of city hall for calling attention to the fact that a one night concert at the Centreplex did not constitute a 'festival'. They have real Music festivals in Savannah. We could learn something, but this is Macon and we are mired in the ways of our ancestors. 'Innovation' is a dirty word. We always seem to forget the lessons of history and so foredoom any chance of success we might have had.

So source says the organizers of our Heritage festival 'hope to have something going' in November. What that apparently means is that that gaggle, Jimmy Mills, I suppose, and Chuck Howard will try to persuade local bands to play for free.

Local bands shouldn't have to play for free. They deserve remuneration far more than Karen Spellman ever did. Local musicians are woefully, in general, underpaid as it is.

Wait and see....but this senior citizen is not holding his breath.

Another one bites the dust.

CELEBRATING RAMADAN
INSIDE MACON'S CITY HALL

As the Muslim world nears the end of Ramadan, a service was held last night in the City Council meeting room. Perhaps fifty local Muslims attended. I wasn't there.

Mayor Ellis switched religions a few months ago jumping from whatever he was previously to the Muslim faith.

The service was fitting. Absolutely fitting.

Fitting?

Sure, just as long as City Hall will permit, or, better, will encourage the placement of a Minorah on the receptionist's desk just outside Hizzoner's officed. Maybe put a statue of the Compassionate Bodda in the foyer which Mayor Ellis uses for news conferences. How about a half dozen Tibetan Monks chanting the endless catalogue of the names of God. Or, most likely here in the heart of the Bible Belt, a nativity scene right on on the steps of City Hall complete with angels, a Baby Jesus, Virgin Mary Mother, and some some cows and sheep. A living tableau would be even better...live sheep, a real baby playing Jesus, and maybe a certified virgin as his blue garbed mother.

The ACLU won't make any kind of legal protest about the Muslim worship serrvice in City Hall, and it certainly wouldn't complain about a candleabrum, chanting monks, or a cool Budda. But let somebody complain about a creche, some cows, sheep, a baby and his mother, and that august body will surely rush to court to quash the nativity scene and its odious Christian message even if the mother of Jesus is played by a real virgin.

WILLIAM F. BUCKLEY ON
NOVAK and CARVILLE and CNN

”The book recounts, "Before I could finish that, a shouting Carville overrode what I had to say. 'He's got to show these right-wingers that he's got backbone,' Carville yelled. 'Show them you're tough.' Two and a half years of coping with Carville's ad hominem attacks welled up in me. 'Well, I think that's bullshit,' I said."

William Buckley is aging as fast as the rest of us, but he still has the master’s touch when it comes to writing a column.

He here recounts, with some sadness, the flap that caused CNN to drop its resident conservative icon Bob Novak from its reportorial roster. The account is taken from Novak’s latest book, THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS. In the end, Carville stays, Novak gets the pink slip, and CNN has found a way to dump its most prominent conservative commentator in its slide to the vapid left. The piece is a chilling reminder of how political favoritism has entered the world of the media, fair and balanced no longer.

The Buckley column is a great little read…not only good opinion, but beautifully written in that elegant writing style that marked even the young Buckley way back in his Yale days.

”But Obama has an opening for a very effective challenge to Hillary over the war if he uses the half-hour interview she gave The New York Times in her Senate office on March 14th of this year. In that on-the-record session, Hillary let slip her real colors on Iraq, revealing her essentially hawkish approach to the issue.

She said that she foresees a ‘remaining military, as well as political, mission" in Iraq. She said she “would keep a reduced but significant military force there to fight al Qaeda, deter Iranian aggression, protect the Kurds and possibly support the Iraqi military.’ “


Dick Morris here gives Obama a fighting chance to unhorse Ms. Clinton from her current perch high atop the party’s catbird seat.

He would have to use her own ‘on the record’ words against her. But she can be defeated in a showdown over the hearts and minds of liberal democrat voters.

It’s an interesting article. I don’t know if he is correct this time….don’t even know if Obama wants to win the nomination by exploiting this weakness. A large part of my instincts tell me that the “O Man” is saving up for a future run, when Her Nibs is forced to retire after two terms. He is young enough and has proved he can energize a sizeable base and raise money with the best of them.

”Economic Integration”
“Single Market”
“Harmonization (with other countries”
“Liberalizing Rules of Origin”
“North American Labor Mobility”?

You will, if you read the column.

How about integrating American Culture with those of Mexico and Canada, two nations who have heard a different drummer throughout their histories?

What if this plan were created and managed entirely by presidential order and un-elected bureaucrats, doing a complete end around Congress which would have no say in the matter?

Ms. Schlafly brings to light a report by the Hudson Institute, a Washing D.C. based ‘think tank’, on what is behind the President’s “Security and Prosperity Partnership," a kind of prelude to a North American Union, a future economic-political establishment not unlike the European Union which has done so much to bring Socialism to Old Europe.

Writes Schlafly, ”Here's how Hudson explains the Security and Prosperity Partnership's process: ‘The most important feature of the SPP design is that it is neither intended to produce a treaty nor an executive agreement like the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) that would require congressional ratification or the passage of implementing legislation in the United States. The SPP was designed to function within existing administrative authority of the executive branch.’”

The big loser? Why the United States and her culture, her history, her way of life. Our way of life.

JUS' A TRAVELLIN' MAN

Sunday's TELEGRAPH carried a lengthy article about Macon's peripatetic mayor, Hizzoner C. Jack Ellis.

It seems that Mr. Ellis has been out of the the country 'at least' 48 days as of September 1 of this year, according to reporter Matt Barnwell.

"Ellis likens himself to former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young who he said was chastised for frequent trips to Africa", wrote Barnwell.

A more apt comparison might be drawn between Ellis and former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell currently in the middle of a three and a half year federal prison term for income tax evasion.

THE NRA RETURNS FIRE
THE NICS IMPROVEMENT ACT

There were a couple of interesting firearms articles in the mailbag this weekend.

The first comes from the NRA, The National Rifle Association which has been taking quite a bit of flack of late for being ‘too moderate’ too tolerant of some anti-gun positions.

CHANGING THE PERSPECTIVE OF CAMPUS RIGHT-TO-LIFERS

As non-proselytizing atheist (which I wish more of my rightly-winged Christian friends would become…..’non-proselytizing’, that is) I often disagree with my favorite university icon (often ‘iconoclasted’), professor Mike Adams of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Mike is a thorn in the side (make that searing pain in the backside) of administrations governing modern institutions of higher learning which are, all too often, merely places of ‘higher indoctrination’, indoctrination in America bashing, socialistic faculty who love the notion of tenure almost as much as they do their political agenda.

We are still suffering from a hang over begun in the late sixties.

Adams is Christian and pro-life, I am neither. But I do respect his views and find this an interesting piece….he lays out, basically, how certain pro-lifers are their own worse enemies on modern college campt.

THE SOMETHING ROTTEN IN MACON, DEPARTMENT
CHARLES RICHARDSON'S OP-ED COMMENT DOES NOT PASS THE WHIFF TEST


In a TELEGRAPH Op-Ed piece dated October 2nd , Charles Richardson takes a close and generally pretty good look at the current make-up and direction of the Bibb County Commission. There is one paragraph, however, that does not pass the ‘smell a rat’ test.

I quote:

”Maurice Atkinson has already declared his intention to run against (Joe) Allen, but it will be to no avail. Allen has a file of Atkinson's quotes from his time at the assessors' office. It's hard to forget that office's meltdown. Now, with Jim Davis' possible departure and the county having to ante up $2 million for a revaluation, voters can't forget Atkinson's great job.

Commissioner Allen must have bamboozled Editor Richardson with his claim to have a ‘file full of Atkinson’s quotes from his time in the assessor’s office.’ There may be a file, and it may contain quotes…quotes purported to have been made by Mr. Atkinson, even. But since Mr. Richardson did not state that he had seen said file, or had perused the contents thereof, there exists a huge credibility gap created by a simple, and probably erroneous assumption on Richardson’s part.

Maurice Atkinson is a man of honor and integrity, a chap who truly believes that holding elective office allows him to serve the community’s needs. During the dark days of the dissolution of the tax board, he acted as a non-partisan force in an atmosphere of much mutual mistrust, animosity, back biting, and vituperation. It was not a pretty place to work, folks, and much of the blame must fall on the shoulders of the County Commissioners who either tacitly encouraged that level pf cesspool politics or ignored it until it got completely out of hand.

It is my firm belief (after lengthy conversations with insiders) that nothing Mr. Atkinson said in public or in private during his few months on the board will in any way endanger his integrity, his credibility, his campaign, nor abet that of his opponent. If there are ‘quotes’, then they are nothing but hearsay, shards of conversations poorly remembered or even created out of thin air. It is either that or these so-called quotes do not exist at all.

Sure like to see what Commissioner Allen has in that folder. Sure would like to know why Editor Richardson did not press him harder on the subject, but seems to have accepted it as gospel truth.

Can’t you smell that rodent now?.

It was just announced that South Georgia College in Douglas has appointed ROBERT E. BRUNEL as its new athletic director. This father couldn't be prouder. It's been a long and wonderful journey.

Raising a naturally gifted athlete, a 'baby jock' isn't easy. It's a matter of perspective and not a little stubbornness on the part of parents who don't think the NFL or the NBA is the ultimate level of human achievement.

SAVANNAH FOLK FESTIVAL
OCTOBER 12…13…14

Savannah is easily the most charming, ‘real down south’ city in Georgia….and one of the most charming anywhere in Dixieland.

In many respects it is what Macon would like to be, or become, or what many from here would like to turn us into. Following so far?

We have reported many times on the state of ‘music festivals’ hereabouts. Macon, the city that hosts the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, home of Otis Redding, Capricorn records, the Allman Brothers simply does not seem to be able to pull together a first class, weekend long gathering of musicians. What we do is demi-derriere’d. It’s not that we have an inferiority complex when it comes to great music celebrations, we are truly inferior. Part of the problem is that our festival leaders are not any too good at (1) promotion and (2) organization. They have a tendency to wait until the last minute and follow the Macon Mantra, “Well, we never did it that way before.”

Now Savannah boasts four major festivals annually. They are well promoted, well-attended bringing in countless big bux into the city by the sea, and organized….each year’s show is set in stone a full year before actually taking place. We Maconites love to pull something out of our collective backsides a few days before anything is scheduled.

Next weekend starting on Friday, October 12th and running through the 14th is the 2007 edition of the SAVANNAH FOLK FESTIVAL which you can learn all about simply by clicking the link. This evening courtest of Georgia Public Radio I have had the pleasure of listening to some of the performers who will be on hand next weekend. I guarantee that, rain or shine, it will be a memorable experience.

But, can Rudy win the nomination? Despite his somewhat liberal stance on issues like abortion and gun control, he seems to be gaining support from Republicans of all stripes coming together in their fear and loathing of Ms. Clinton.

Well, at least he isn't going anywhere.

According to a Breitbart dot com article Larry Craig is not going to resign his Senate seat despite the urging of the GOP leadership and a judge's refusal to overturn his original confession that he had engaged in 'lewd conduct' in an air port crapper.

So now it's on to the Senate Ethics Committee, where the affair will drag on for months, sapping both the time and energy of that already lackluster bodfy.

Time and energy that could better be used to attack some of America's real problems.

We must always remember in the fog that is Washington-inside-the-beltway, no matter how low the current President's approval rating may be, that, thanks to N. Pelosi and H. Reid, the people think even less of their congress.

Yesterday's little article on Mayor Ellis and a possible bid for the eighth congressional seat brought a flood of emails.

I could quote some of them, but this is, more or less, a family oriented web site and I wouldn't want to upset the kiddies on the last school day of the week.

Supposing some little nipper were to fail a social studies test, his eyes are brimming with overflowing tears, all because he reads here that some callous clod denigrated his hero here in the b'logosphere.

”The office did not emerge easily from the Constitutional Convention. The founders were naturally suspicious of a strong executive, having just endured the excesses of the British Crown's royal governors in colonial times. Professor Sabato argues for some fundamental changes in the way we structure both the House and the Senate to make them more accountable to the people and to allow individual congressmen more fairly to represent a state’s population. Sabato looks at the presidency in PART II, and fascinating insight it shows. After a brief, but cogent, historical analysis of the office of Chief Executive, he makes some suggestions about the length of term a president may serve, understanding that at least half of his first is spent running for a second, and that during the last two years of his second he becomes a ‘lame duck’. There are ways to make the presidency more efficient and, therefore, more able to do the bidding of the people.

RUNNING FOR
MAYOR?

In a surprise move, Macon's mayor C. Jack Ellis announced at the end of a presentation today that he is forming an exploratory committee to look into running for the 8th congressional district seat current held by Jim Marshall.

The eighth needs 'a real deomcrat', intoned Hizzoner, implying that Marshall, himself a former Macon mayor, is not true enough to what the Party of the Mythic Jackass stands for.

Marshall is a popular Congressman largely for his support for the military generally, the troops fighting in Iraq, and Robins Air Force Base, the main economic engine in the entire region.

It should be pretty obvious that C.J. is not exactly in touch with the reality of current area politics.

Besides, given the possibility of federal indictments coming down at the end of his term, or the persistent rumor that the mayor is constructing a luxurious pleasure palace in sub sahara Africa for his retirement in a far-away land that doesn't have an extradition treaty with the USA, isn't it unlikely that the chap will be in any position to run for further offfice?

NITPICKING THE IRAQ WAR

I don’t have a whole hell of a lot to say about the Limbaugh flap….’phony soldier’, or ‘phony soldiers’.

What a different an ‘s’ makes, eh?

The whole thing started as a mindless, blog-fueled attack by frustrated Democrats upon a conservative icon, and has been continued ever since by equally mindless, stupid, pusillanimous, puerile, immature, name calling and faux posturing by both sides of our ersatz political spectrum.

‘Frustrated Democrats’? You betcha. These clowns despite a clear majority in both houses of Congress have been able to accomplish nothing, nada against the ongoing Iraq war (or much else, for that matter). The party’s left wing remains shrill, elected politicians pay some lip service, but their feet are made of clay. How can these small minds sleep at night?

Frustrated because despite the national mood and temperament that desires a change in policy, or at least a real debate on what has become the over-weaning political football of our times, despite the length of this war, the casualties, the expense, and the near ruination of an all-volunteer armed services, the majority party has been bested at every turn by a president most of them consider beneath themselves in the brains department.

The mood of members (of both parties) is ‘the hell with the national interest, I need to get re-elected’.

And so they nit-pick…trying to gain traction and re-electability by setting up pissy little stumbling blocks that delight bloggers, give talk show hosts more fodder than they need, but ignore the real issue, which is, we need A MAJOR, FAR-REACHING DEBATE ON THE WAR.

The Limbaugh m,ess is nothing but smoke and mirrors and doesn’t mean a damn thing.

The GOP isn’t any better, not these days. Statesmanship has vanished from both major political parties, statesmanship so desperately needed in these dark times, real leaders elected who can help us define who we are as a nation and where we are headed, and how we are going to get there. I can’t recall a real statesman up in Washington for decades.

A question I have asked several times in this space needs repeating: WHAT WILL BE THE ULTIMATE SOURCE OF THE COMING AMERICAN TYRANNY….OUR POLITICAL LEFT OR OUR POLITICAL RIGHT??

I know the answer now, it will come from both sides, left and right equally guilty of destroying the world’s most noble experiment in government…..this American Republic.

It will come not with a bang, but with a GOTCHA!!!

IF IMPORTED CHINESE TOYS CAN KILL OUR KIDS

WHAT ARE CHINESE FOOD IMPORTS DOING TO THE REST OF US?

I felt very uncomfortable yesterday afternoon shopping at Walmart.

That gigantic corporation is, of course, one of the largest importers of goods bearing American names, but made overseas in developing countries like Red China, all of Southeast Asia, and impovrished Bangledesh. It is cheaper for them; consumers like getting their Old West Levis with a MADE IN CHINA label.

In rescuing Asian economies, we have made ourselves, our kids, and our pets vulnerable. Rumor has it that we shall be rescuing the economies of Sub Saharan Africa next...you know the birthplace of AIDS and the cradle of the EBOLA VIRUS.

I bought a bottle of Apple Juice since I was out of my favorite beverage. Checked the label. It read MADE FROM CONCENTRATE, but no point of origin was given. I asked the check out clerk...she stared at me with vacant eyes offering nothing.

A quick check with an assistant manager confirmed some of my fears. China, which exports dangerous toys and dog food, also imports people food into the United States, food in vast quantities. Much of it is unlabeled because it is processed, canned, frozem, or bottled on this side of the Pacific. Point of origin matters not.

What kind of food? We are not talking fortune cookies and tea, son, this stuff is found everywhere up and down our food chain.

At this point I have no idea whether the apple juice I purchased at WalMart claims China in its history. Or most other foods identifiable by name or brand.

But we shall start asking a few pointed questions of local Food Store managers and pass the results along to you.

FULL PROFESSOR ACCOSTS ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR MIKE ADAMS IN MID STREAM

”Many of my readers are wondering how a tenured professor could accrue a level of intellectual arrogance severe enough to produce a belief that he may, a) invent constitutional rights, b) enforce them via the death penalty, c) remedy the constitutional violation by the murder of the person (note: the professor admitted that the fetus was a “child”) whose rights were violated, and d) allow the killing to actually be ordered by the perpetrator.”

This Mike Adams’ opus is just a tad bit hard to follow (had to read some of it twice but the hour was early and my brain functions have been somewhat impaired due to the recent mildew wars), but interesting. Seems that our hero was tapped on the shoulder (by a full professor, no less; Mike is involved in a big-time lawsuit with his university’s administration that he, resident gadfly that he is, has not himself been granted a full professorship; rank, it seems, is as pretentious at the college level as it is in the military.) who, interrupting Mr. Adams in full stream, stated that every child in America has a “constitutional right to be loved”.

The result of this encounter is: MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO BE LOVED

Read it…twice if necessary….and please do not compare this encounter with a recent senator’s tryst in an airport john stall.

Which stall, incidentally, is being replaced by one whose side panels now reach all the way to the floor, or so we are informed by an MSNBC Morning Joe screen crawl.
