DIRTY WORDS AND MUCH, MUCH MORE

WE THANK MAYOR ELLIS for informing us via a recent news conference that, by the end of the current (sc. budget) year, Macon will have a million bucks in the bank.

This is great news. To me personally it means that we can devote this column space to matters other than tiresome city business, safe and secure in the sure knowledge that all is well within a heavily bunkered City Hall. Our fair city has escaped financial ruin. Thank you, Mr. Mayor, and, by extension, Thank you Ms. Clark, for all you do.

Our friend Deborah refers to the large building atop Poplar Street as ‘City Hell’.

AND FROM THE SCEPTERED ISLE ACROSS THE SEA, Prince Charles, the presumptive next king unless his geriatric mamma outlives him, will wed his long-time mistress Camilla Parker Bowles. Back in the day of Henry VIII, the ex was usually beheaded before His August Nibs hooked up with the next lucky dudette. This was an efficient process for its time.

We suggest that the Brits create a new title for Camilla, one more twenty-first century rather than tiresome and traditional. How about ‘The Royal Ho’, then she could be addressed as ‘Your Royal Ho-ness’.

MARK THORNTON appeared at a recent City Council meeting flanked by two ah, er, um ‘gentlemen’, implying they are body guards whose services he could supply as needed. Mark, honestly now, do you think that anyone would hire one of these, uh, characters to guard a personal hen house? Where did you find them? If I feel threatened, I would rather get help from the residents of the LEC. This is a joke, isn’t it?

HEY, KELLY! How much money does the city have in the bank today?

INSTANT MOVIE REVIEW: Meet The Fockers is an open invitation for any smart-assed pre-teen to say out loud what he thinks to be the ultimate dirty word without getting a sharp rap across the mouth.

SPEAKING OF…..

It’s just another dirty word.

Maybe the dirtiest word of all.

But it’s a word heard from hundreds, perhaps thousands of preachers every Sunday. Heard directly from the pulpit or from wherever our ubiquitous fundamentalists spread their very own special ‘Word’.

It is heard loud and clear in classrooms from elementary to graduate school every day, often spoken by a few exceptional educators, as well as the myriad teachers unworthy of anybody’s respect.

SPRINGTIME FOR MACON IN GEORGIA

SENATOR KERRY: “I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it. (March 16, 2004)

MAYOR ELLIS: “We’re not able to tax people as much as we would like…”
Why Campaign Managers have ulcers.

Where to begin? Aye, there’s the rub.

Rarely, if ever, have we seen a week so politically charged (and we’re only talking L’il Old Macon, here, sportsfans). What the President did to the Democrats in his State of the Union Address is another subject altogether.

Open warfare has now erupted in city hall, a claque of City Councilors proclaiming loudly at a press conference Hizzoner is out to get them, circulating largely unfounded rumors about their private lives, undermining their credibility within their respective wards.

This rumor mongering, it is alleged, is the source of Councilman Charles Dudley’s problems with the FBI.

The sometimes useful ‘word on the street’ is that a number of well-known Black Pastors, strong allies of Mr. Ellis, their reverend selves seduced by the siren promise of riches heretofore undreamed of straight from the pig trough of governmental ‘faith based’ initiative, constitute the backbone of Mayor Ellis’ support.

Are honorable men and women like Dudley, Hutto, Ficklin and Lucas being maligned from the pulpits of politically-compromised pastors on Sunday morning?

Is mayor Ellis working not only to undermine the power of the current council, but striving with might and main to ensure they will not again be elected to office?

Does he intend to hand-pick his successor?

These are but questions waiting to be answered.

BY THE WAY, COUNCILMAN STEBIN HORNE’S PROPOSAL to merge the Bibb County Sheriff’s office with Macon’s police force is not only timely, but absolutely necessary.

CONDOLEEZA RICE AND THE DEMOCRATS

Condoleeza Rice is a brilliant woman of unimpeachable character and reputation who has been savaged recently by some of the more outspoken members of the United States Senate.

Although confirmed overwhelmingly, there is obviously a solid gaggle of liberal opposition, Senators Boxer, Kennedy, and Kerry leading the pack.

In the last week much has been written about ‘the meaning’ of the why of this, but nobody in our experience has got it quite right yet. Closest to the ‘truth’, in my opinion, is Charles Krauthammer whose recent column http://www.townhall.com/columnists/charleskrauthammer/ck20050128.shtml is truly excellent analysis.

Yet it misses an important point.

I emailed Mr. Krauthammer saying, in part:
